George “Newt” Blanchard, 83, of Druids Lane passed away Sunday in West Springfield after a long battle with kidney disease. He was born in Springfield on March 19th, 1934 to the late Frederick and Florence (Newton) Blanchard. George was a graduate of West Springfield High School in 1953 and Post Graduate of Monson Academy in 1954 where he excelled in basketball and football. In 1952, he was selected as an All-Western Mass High School Football player and was a star End in the last Western Mass team to play in the Peanut Bowl in Valdosta, GA. George worked at the Germantown, MD and Westfield, MA Walmart for 15 years as a greeter. He also worked as the Sexton at the South Congregational Church in Springfield. He served his country in the U.S. Army 1955-1957 while stationed in Panama. He was a longtime member of the West Springfield Fish and Game Club and was also an Honorary Deputy Sheriff with the Hampden County Deputy Sherriff’s Association. He was a communicant to St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield.
He is survived by his daughter Michelle Blanchard Vargas and her husband Rafael of N. Granby, CT, and was predeceased by his son Erik C. Blanchard in 2011, he also leaves his sisters Barbara Scott (and her husband Carl) and Florence Herlihy of West Springfield, and was predeceased by his brother Frederick in 2000. He was the cherished grandfather to Isabella, Gabriella, and Sofia Vargas Blanchard and Christine, David, and Ivy Blanchard. He leaves behind his devoted nieces and nephews; Donna, Michael, Rhodie, Wendy, Barbara, Christine, Paul, Corrine, David, Doreen, Sean, Patrick, Aimee, and especially Ben and Carl for all the care they gave George. In addition, he leaves behind many great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Heritage Dialysis Center in Agawam for their kindness and care for George. There will be a Funeral Mass 12 Noon Friday November 10th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield. Burial will be at 3pm in MA Veterans’ Cemetery in Agawam. Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is entrusted with all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newt Blanchard Memorial Scholarship Fund (benefiting a West Springfield H.S. graduating athlete) c/o United Bank 95 Elm Street, West Springfield, MA 01089.
