West Springfield– Martha Alice (Bird) McNamara, 86, passed away September 16, 2017 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Springfield to the late Alice (Wright) and Clifton Bird. Martha was raised in Chicopee and has lived in West Spfld. since 1954. She was a graduate of Holy Name High School in Chicopee and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Martha began her nursing career in the Mercy Hospital Emergency Room and then worked as a private duty nurse for years. She worked at the West Springfield Nursing Home from 1969 until her retirement in April 1990. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in W. Spfld. where she was a member of the Women’s Club and served as their President. Martha was a longtime member of the W. Spfld. St. Patrick Parade Committee and was the first Jinx Powers Award winner in 2002. She was also a member of the Mercy Alumni Association. Martha will be remembered for the hundreds of Irish Soda Breads she made for her family and friends for years. She will be reunited with her beloved husband and love of her life, W. Spfld. Police Chief, Thomas P. McNamara, Jr. who passed away in 2011. Martha leaves her loving children, Mary Ellen Reilly of Litchfield, NH, Thomas J. “Tucker” McNamara and his wife Laurie of W. Spfld. and Ann M. LaPalme and her husband Michael of Feeding Hills, her adored grandchildren, TJ McNamara and his wife Leah, Robert McNamara, Christopher Reilly and Jenna Genere, Meghan Reilly and Antoine Sheppard, Nick LaPalme and Kristina Fraser and her cherished great-grandchildren, Adalynn and Tommy McNamara, Adrianna and Jordan Reilly, Antoine, Aniya and Shareese Sheppard, Timothy and Cooper LaPalme and Kirra, Drew and Evan Fraser. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Jack Bird and Dr. Robert Bird. Family and friends are invited to meet directly at St. Thomas Church, 65 Pine Street for a Liturgy of Christian Burial on Friday morning at 10AM. The burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4-7PM at the TOOMEY-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield St. W. Spfld.. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas School, 75 Pine Street, W.
