Mary Ellen (Monroe) Nihill, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Waterbury Hospital, surrounded and comforted by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Nihill who passed in 2002. Mary Ellen was born August 20, 1928, in Springfield, the daughter of the late Elmer and Agnes Monroe. Educated in the West Springfield school system, she worked many years at The Springfield Newspaper. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Thomas Church. Mary Ellen was deeply devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was loved by so many. She will be remembered for her intelligence, quick wit and endless generosity. Her home was a place of many happy memories. She leaves her two children, Michael Nihill and his wife, Kim, of Southbury, CT and Joanne Chentouf of Ocoee, FL; her five grandchildren, Nicholas and Joey Nihill; Jamella, Yasin and Braheim Chentouf and many beloved family members. She was predeceased by her sister, Jean Moynihan. Her family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by her doctors and the staff of Waterbury Hospital, The Lutheran Home of Southbury and the Greater Springfield Senior Services. There will be Calling Hours on Thursday, 9:30am – 11am at the TOOMEY-OBRIEN Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Church at 11:30am with a burial following at St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
