West Springfield- Richard F. “Dick” McNamara, 85, passed away Friday at Baystate Medical Center. He was born in Springfield to the late Margaret (Cummins) and Thomas McNamara. Dick was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, and served a four-year tour of duty during the Korean War, two years of which he was stationed in Japan. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School where he was an outstanding lineman on the football team and was named to the first team – 1950 all city Springfield School football team. Dick went on to get his Bachelor’s Degree from Brandeis University, which he attended on a football scholarship. He was employed for 34 years in the Railroad Police Service, retiring as superintendent of police of the National Railroad Passenger Corp. (AMTRAK). After retiring from AMTRAK he worked for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service for 16 years retiring in 2004. Dick was an avid golfer and a former longtime member of the West Springfield-Agawam Elks. Dick was predeceased by his brother, former W. Spfld. Police Chief, Thomas P. McNamara, Jr and his longtime companion Carol Harabin. He was the beloved brother-in-law to Martha McNamara of W. Spfld. Dick was the loving uncle of, Mary Ellen Reilly of Litchfield, NH, Thomas J. McNamara and his wife Laurie of W. Spfld. and Ann LaPalme and her husband Michael of Feeding Hills and devoted great-uncle to TJ McNamara and his wife Leah, Bob McNamara, Christopher Reilly, Meghan Reilly, Nick LaPalme and Kristina Fraser and several great-great-nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his loving companion, Marion Gilbert of W. Spfld. There will be an 11:30AM Funeral Home Service Saturday at the TOOMEY-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield St. W. Spfld., followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:30-11:30AM.
