Robert "Bob" Leslie Goodhind, 91, passed away in the Holyoke Soldiers' Home on Thursday, January 25 with his family by his side. Bob was born in Springfield on April 1, 1926 to the late Leslie & Beatrice (Barrus) Goodhind. He was a lifelong resident of West Springfield and a graduate of West Springfield High School where he was a National Honor Society member. He served in the Navy from 1943-1951 in both the South Pacific and in Korea as a gunner’s mate. He was awarded the Philippines Liberation Medal with 2-stars and the Asia-Pacific Theater Medal with 5-stars. He was a Plank Owner for the U.S.S. McNair #DD-679. In 2010, he was recognized by the City of West Springfield as the Veteran of the Year. Bob worked as the Water Meter Reader for the Town of West Springfield and sold cars for Fenton Auto. He was the first car salesman for the Bertera Auto Group in West Springfield. He was also a licensed real estate broker. He always had an interest in cars, guns, and also enjoyed poker, boxing and military music. Bob practiced his faith in the Methodist Church. He served on the Board of Directors on the Council on Aging and was the first recipient of the Charles W. Gonnello Award in 2015. For over 20 years, he acquired medical equipment and donated it to people in need. He was a generous and easy-going person who was always ready to help others. Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Patricia (Looney) Goodhind in 2007. He leaves his only son, Alan Goodhind, his grandson Jonathan, and his daughter-in-law Susan (Oliynik) Goodhind of West Springfield. He was predeceased by his sister Marjorie Condon. The family would like to thank Hospice of Western and Central Massachusetts and also offer a special thank you to Holyoke Soldiers' Home for the wonderful care given to Bob during his stay there. Funeral services will be private and Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements.
