William F. BennettMarch 9, 1929 ~ December 29, 2017 (age 88)
William F. Bennett joined his beloved wife Sylvia in heaven on December 29, 2017. William was born in Stoughton, MA on March 9, 1929, to the late Beatrice (Frost) and Joseph Bennett. He was brought up in Stoughton and went to St. Mary’s School. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Boston in 1948. He was a Veteran of the Korean War from 1951-1953. Bill graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1958 and received his Master’s Degree from Bridgewater State in 1960. He later continued his graduate work at Harvard University and Springfield College. He taught in Holbrook and Rockland while doing research work for the Kennedy Foundation. He set up summer recreation programs for children with special needs and later became the Chairman of the Mass. Board of Special Education. He started working in West Springfield in 1966 as a School Psychologist and was Director of the Pupil Personnel Service Program. Bill was also Past President of the School Psychologist Association. After coming to West Springfield he set up classes for emotionally disturbed children while doing research on autistic children. He was predeceased by his loving wife Sylvia A. (McRae) Bennett in 2008. He leaves his beloved son John J. Bennett of Springfield, VA, his three brothers Joseph T. Bennett, S.J. of the Campion Center in Weston, Fenton Bennett and John Bennett and his wife Louise all of Brockton, and his sister Mary Toomey and her husband William also of Brockton. Bill also leaves many devoted nieces and nephews. Bill also leaves his good friend Mary Pothier of West Springfield. The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to nurses, health aides, and doctors from Heritage Hall West, C Wing for all the care and compassion they showed Bill during his stay there. Bill loved and was loved by the Dominican Nuns at the Mother of God Monastery in West Springfield. His funeral will be Friday at 9 AM at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will be 11 AM at the Mass. Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4-7 PM at the funeral home.
