Birgitta Emy Gray (77) passed away January 3, 2018 at the Redstone Rehab Facility in East Longmeadow, with her loving son John and her Paster Rev Philip Joseph Mayher by her side. She was born April 16, 1940 in Lund, Sweden to the late Emy Jundquest and John Naumann. Birgitta moved to New York in her early 20s, where she met her husband of 49 years, Robert Gray. She and Robert were married February 6, 1962 in Plainville, Massachusetts. They resided, for most of their lives, in Maynard, Massachusetts. Birgitta worked as a medical group manager and head administrator for Beverly Hospital for many years. She and Robert retired to West Springfield, Massachusetts in 2006 and spent time traveling around the country. Her beloved husband passed away Oct 1 2011. She worked part-time as a bookkeeper for various businesses in the area. Birgitta was very active at the West Springfield Senior Center as a volunteer. She and her friend Marilyn Carr ran the Friends Senior Travel Club for many years. She was also assistant Treasurer of the Friends of West Springfield and very involved in all fundraisers for the center. She had an outgoing personality with a warm smile. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed. Birgitta is survived by her son, John Gray of Hawaii, her daughter, Stephanie Gonthier and her husband Michael Pastreich, her granddaughter Karina, her grandson, Erik, her step granddaughter, Meghan all of Florida, and her brother, John Olov Naumann of Sweden. An open service will be held at the Mittineaque Congregational Church at a future time. She loved vacationing in coastal Maine, where her ashes will be scattered along with her husband Robert this spring. Donations may be made in her memory to Friends of Acadia, P.O. Box 45, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609, and to the West Springfield Senior Center, 128 Park St, West Springfield, Ma 01089. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
