It is with great sadness that the family of Charles “Charlie” Gardner Wood, Jr. announces his sudden passing on Sunday, April 14, 2019. Charlie was born in Springfield on July 25, 1932 and lived almost his entire life in West Springfield. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1949 and American International College in 1953. Charlie worked as a Chemical Engineer for 37 years at Hamilton Standard (a Division of United Technologies) in Windsor Locks, CT before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed bowling, playing tennis, golfing and spending time with his family and friends, especially on Cape Cod. Charlie leaves his loving wife and best friend of 57 years, Theresa “Terry” Donnellan Wood, his two daughters, Karen Clayberg and her partner Eric Simon and Julie L’Italien and her husband Scott, his former son-in-law Eric Clayberg, his sister-in-law Kathleen Donnellan and long-time family friend, Jim Conlin. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren Lauren and Lee Clayberg and Andrew and Kaitlyn L’Italien, who brought him much pride and joy. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Charles Gardner Sr. and Julie (Hennessey) Wood, his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Adam Carl Link, and his long-time friends Fred Conlin, George Crum and Dick Johnson. Family and friends are invited to gather at TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield St., West Springfield on Tuesday, April 23rd at 9:30am. Funeral Mass to follow at 11:30am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine St., West Springfield. Interment will be private and at a later date.
