Gerald “Jerry” Francis Begley Sr., 79, of Calvin Street passed away Monday at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Springfield on June 19th, 1938 to the late Francis and Estelle (McKay) Begley. He lived all of his life in West Springfield and was a graduate of West Springfield High School. He proudly served as a West Spfld. Police Officer for 38 years. He retired in 1999. Jerry was very active in the town of West Springfield and was a member of the West Springfield/Agawam Elks Club, the Knights of Columbus and was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. He was extremely proud of his Irish Heritage and was a member of The West Springfield St. Patrick Day Parade Committee and was elected the West Spfld. St. Patrick’s Day Parade Marshall. He also was the recipient of the W. Spfld./Agawam Irish Elk of the Year Award. He enjoyed his many trips to Ireland with his wife and was a longtime member of the John Boyle O’Reilly in Springfield. Jerry was an avid gardener and loved spending time in his backyard planting and cultivating his gardens. He was the beloved husband of 50 yrs. to Teresa (Ginty) Begley, loving father of Gerald Begley Jr. and his wife Michelle of Suffield, CT, Darrin Begley and his wife Melanie of Sandwich, and Brenna Ryan and her husband Nolan of West Springfield, caring brother of Joanne Begley with whom he co-owned the Crest Room in West Spfld., and devoted grandfather of Cassidy, Ben, and Cam Begley, Ashlyn Begley, and Nolan, Brogan, and Macklan Ryan. The funeral will be 11 AM Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church followed by a burial at St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Jerry’s name may be made to St. Thomas School, 75 Pine Street, West Springfield, MA 01089. Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements.
