It is with great sadness that the family of Gilbert Francis Betterton announces his passing on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the age of 86, after a long illness. Gil was born on October 12, 1932 in Preston, Nebraska. He joined the Air Force in 1951 at the age of 19 and retired honorably in 1972. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and earned numerous service awards. He retired from Westover Air Force Base and settled in Granby, Mass, with the love of his life, Marion. Together, they raised 3 sons. He then moved on to work in Loss Prevention for several major retail chains.  He fully retired in 1985 and then traveled the country. Gil and Marion spent their free time helping at the Granby Senior Center and at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. He was always involved in hands-on projects with his children and he spent relaxing time camping, gardening, building in his workshop, or wintering in Florida. Gil was predeceased by his parents, Gilbert E. and Ceceleia Zimmerman, his brother, Clifford Betterton, and his sister, Maryetta Glassel. Gil is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Marion (Denesha) and his children, Chuck and Rebecca Betterton, Richard Betterton, and Steven and Lynne Betterton. He will be lovingly remembered by his 5 grandchildren: Richard Jr., Emily, Daniel, Steven Jr., and Alyssa. A service with full military honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Special thanks to the caring staff at JGS Lifecare in Longmeadow, Massachusetts and to his long-time home care provider, Leia Smith. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gilbert’s name to the VA of Massachusetts or the Wounded Warrior Project. Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
