Joseph J. Scott Sr., 82, of West Springfield, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Born Nov. 21, 1936 in St. Croix, New Brunswick, Canada, he was the son of the late Charles and Annie (Grass) Scott. Joe was a railroad worker in his younger days before he joined the U.S. Navy, where he honorably served on the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War. After serving his country for four years, Joe worked as a machinist at Rexnord in Springfield, Mass. for 28 years. An avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, he married the love of his life, Louise K. (White) Scott in 1963, and they were together until her death in 2011. Together they had two children, Joseph J. Scott Jr., of Agawam, and Katherine M. Scott of West Springfield. Affectionately known as Papa to his loving family, he was the proud grandfather to four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In his retirement, he was an active and proud member of the Pioneer Valley Sportsman Club in West Springfield and West Springfield Fish and Game in Agawam. He also enjoyed taking annual trips back to Canada to visit family, driving himself every year until he was 80. Joe is survived by his siblings, Sylvia MacDonald of New Brunswick; Paul Wayne Scott and wife Pat of Prince Edward Island; Margarite Thornton and partner Chris Kirk of Ontario; and Doreen Webb of Florida. He is also survived by his special nephew, Daniel Scott and wife Marcia; his grandchildren, Krystal L. Hanouille and husband Jeff; Joseph C. Scott and wife Sarah; Michael A. Scott; and Ashley A. Watt, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Papa will also be greatly missed by his six great-grandkids, Makenzie, Kylie, Jaxson, Autumn, Ella, and Mason, whom he loved more than anything. He was predeceased by his wife Louise, his siblings Goldie Roy, Gail Steeves, Velma Scott, Gerald Scott, and Arthur “Artie” Scott. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019 at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019 at Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., West Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joe’s honor to the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke.
