Lena Ann (Alessi) Malerba, 97, of Greenleaf Ave., West Springfield, passed away August 9, 2019 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. She was born August 12, 1921 in Holyoke and lived in West Springfield her entire life. She graduated West Springfield High School in 1941 where she later worked at Roberts Foods for several years before dedicating herself as a loving homemaker to her predeceased husband of 52 years, Americo A Malerba (1998), a daughter Cynthia M. Barber of Vero Beach, Florida, and two sons, Richard M. Malerba of Feeding Hills, Ma, and David E. Malerba of Parker, Colorado. She is also survived by her sister Marie O’Clair of Catonsville, Maryland and leaves 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was a communicant of St. Thomas Church and participated in many civic activities in her younger life related to town and national election vote counting, canvasing the neighborhood for the US Census and volunteered for many charitable organizations including the American Heart Society, American Cancer Society, The Boys and Girls Club and the UNICO Club. She enjoyed square dancing and travelling with her beloved husband Rico. She also enjoyed gardening and a nice sunny day in the backyard of her family home of over 60 years. A Celebration of her Life and committal service will be held 10:00 AM Friday September 20, 2019 in the Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice. The TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME IS IN CHARGE OF THE ARRANGEMENTS.
