Roger Joseph Hannigan, 79 passed away on April 9. Roger was born in Springfield August 24, 1939. He was a graduate of High School of Commerce where he was named to the all-state band. He attended Northeastern University for his undergraduate degree and received master’s degrees from both AIC and Westfield State college where he specialized in education. While at AIC, he was a proud member of Delta Tau Delta ZX fraternity. He taught in the Springfield School System his entire 40 year career. He most enjoyed his work with special needs children. During his summers off he spent time as a games supervisor at Riverside Park, an inventory specialist at Teddy Bear Pools and volunteered at the Channel 57 auction. Roger married Sandra Berges in 1963 and while enjoying 47 years together, they raised Robert and Elizabeth. He was a wonderful grandpa to Kourtney Hannigan. In addition, he is survived by his sister-in-law Cheryl MacGeorge and her husband Richard of Atlanta, GA, with whom he traveled extensively. He will be missed by his beloved extended family Sally and Don Appleton as well as being a special friend to Ruth Henry. He enjoyed spending time at his home on Cape Cod. Roger enjoyed many arts and crafts projects, cooking and participating in gymkhana road racing earning him many trophies. Roger was active in town. For years he helped with Operation Santa, held the position of Park and Rec Coordinator and served on the board at the West Springfield senior center. The center also provided weekly card games for which he always looked forward to. He was a proud member of the Golden Blue Ribbon Singers. He traveled to different venues to entertain elders and anyone who would listen. From a young age he loved animals of all kinds. His favorite breed of dog was the great Dane. He bred and raised these gentle giants. Anyone fortunate enough to have known Roger knew of his kindness, integrity, ability to help others and his best trait humor. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 1 from 4-6 PM at the Toomey O'Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., W.
