Obituary
Alan Whitney Howe, 88, of Great Plains Road passed away Friday at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Westfield on April 14, 1931 to the late Milton and Edna (Whitney) Howe. Al lived in West Springfield all of his life and was a graduate of West Springfield High School. He owned and operated the former Jones’ Variety Store in West Springfield for years. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War Veteran and served in Korea on the U.S.S. Saipan Aircraft Carrier.  He was formerly a member of the First Congregational Church in West Springfield. Al loved life and always enjoyed a good joke and a Heineken Beer.  He was the loving husband of 63 yrs. to Sandra “Sandy” (Norris) Howe, beloved father of Susan Miller and her husband Mike of West Springfield, Alan Howe and his wife Maureen of West Springfield,  Robin Mulcahy and her husband Tim of South Windsor, CT,  Nancy Pass and her husband Bob of Enfield, CT and Jennifer Gomes and her husband Victor of Westfield, caring brother of Martha Adams and her husband Earl of Suffield, CT and the late Edwin and Milton Howe, devoted grandfather of Bryan Miller and his wife Shanna, Christina Cote and her husband Jim, Taylor and Matthew Mulcahy, Lauren Pass and the late Bobby Pass, and McKenzie Gomes, and great grandfather of Eric, Caleb, and Grace. He also leaves cherished dog, Buster. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Paula and Maria and the entire staff of Baystate Hospice of Springfield for all their care and compassion. There will be a Private Funeral Service followed by a Private Committal Service at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. There will be a Celebration of Life Service scheduled at a later date. Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements.  In lieu of flowers donations in Al’s name may be made to Baystate Home Health/Baystate Hospice, 30 Capital Drive, West Springfield, MA 01089.
