Obituary
Beautiful, loving, talented, funny, sometimes troubled, but always hopeful, Alex Thomas Bullen died in his sleep at the age of 32. Born in El Salvador and adopted as a baby, Alex happily spent his earliest years in Deerfield Massachusetts, moving to Baltimore, Maryland with his parents in 2000. He graduated in 2007 from Gilman School, where he found his place to shine in Karl Connolly’s Art studio. He attended The Maryland Institute College of Art and Towson University, graduating from Towson with a BS in Art & Design. Alex loved to laugh, abhorred injustice of any kind, and had a keen and observant eye, a quick wit, and a generous spirit. He seemed to know every nook and cranny, beautiful and otherwise, of his adopted city of Baltimore and loved hiking its urban paths, streets, and surrounding parks and trails. He loved attending galleries and festivals and found beauty and appreciation everywhere. Most of all, he took great pleasure in the intense camaraderie and creativity of a Wall well painted. Alex’s death leaves a gaping hole in the hearts and lives of his parents, Greg Bullen and Patti Whalen. He will be deeply missed by his godmother, Dr. Christine Whalen; his uncles and aunt - Tom Whalen, Chris Bullen, Bruce Bullen, Maria Krokidas, and Larry Riley; his many wonderful cousins and extended family on both sides; and his friends who knew him as a kind, creative, sensitive, and happy spirit.  After a private service, Alex will find rest and peace in the hills of Western Massachusetts, alongside his beloved grandparents, Dr. Thomas and Hazel Whalen. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Those who wish to honor Alex’s life may contribute in his name to Cromwell Valley Park, 2002 Cromwell Bridge Rd, Parkville, MD 21234 (cromwellvalleypark.org) or to a Baltimore charity of their choice.
