Obituary

Anthony J Bonacquisti passed away on Monday, June 8, surrounded by his loving family. Anthony was born in Pittsfield, MA June 15, 1936, to the late Mariano and Concetta (DiSantis) Bonacquisti and was the sixth of eight children. He grew up in Pittsfield and with his wife Therese, settled in West Springfield over 50 years ago. Anthony earned his BS from North Adams State College and MS in Geography from Penn State University. He began his teaching career at South Junior High in Pittsfield, but his love was teaching at the college level. Anthony was a Geography professor in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning at Westfield State University for 40 years. He ran numerous trips to Europe for his students in addition to spending time with family in his parents’ village in Italy. He was a co-owner of two Carvel Ice Cream franchises in Springfield. He loved cooking, gardening and traveling. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Family meant everything to him, whether spending time with his siblings or his children, grandchildren and great grandson. His beloved wife of 59 years, Therese (Chapdelaine) Bonacquisti passed away in 2024. He will be sorely missed by his children, Maria (David) McDermott of Watertown, Michael (Susan) of Springfield, Mark of Springfield, and Michelle (Chris, deceased) Klein of Westboro, his grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan and Nicolas McDermott, Lauren and Christopher Klein, his loving great grandson, Jack and his many beloved nephews and nieces. He leaves his siblings, Bonnie Mele of Pittsfield, Sandy Lovato of Pittsfield and Liz Unbehind of CT. He is predeceased by his sister Catherine, and brothers John, Angelo and Joe. Anthony’s funeral mass will be held at St Thomas Church Thursday June 18 at 11am with calling hours 9:00-10:30am at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home 1043 Westfield St West Springfield. His family is forever grateful for all who cared for him, including the caregivers at Caring Solutions and his special caregiver Amber Hoffman.
