West Springfield

Betty J. Prenosil, 89, of West Springfield, Massachusetts, entered into eternal peace surrounded by her loving family on September 15, 2025. Born in Rutland, Vermont, daughter of the late Wilfred C. and Kathleen M. Shackett, Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, John “Ed” Prenosil. Both were lifelong members of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She was the devoted mother of Michelle and Tim Auger, Denise Stack, and John M. Prenosil and Leah Greenberger. Betty was the cherished grandmother of Ben, Ali, Brett, Michael, Brian, Katie, Maggie, Mary, Maren, and Avery, and great-grandmother of four. She also leaves behind many wonderful nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends who all held a special place in her heart.

Betty was a graduate of Rutland High School and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator, and she retired from Baystate Medical Center in 1994. Betty was a member of the American Diabetes Association and American Association of Diabetic Educators, and after retirement Betty served on the Advisory Board for the Diabetes Teaching Program at Baystate Medical Center.

For over 25 years Betty loved playing dominoes every Monday with her special group of friends. It was always a great time to discuss current events, children, and grandchildren.

Betty loved her family and that is what mattered the most to her. Those who knew her could tell you how proud she was of her children, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She treasured every moment spent with them and those memories filled her heart with joy. She was also blessed with many wonderful friends and neighbors who meant the world to her.

Betty’s family thanks Baystate Hospice, especially Jonathan, for his dedication and compassionate care. Special thanks also to her nurse, Debi.

Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 11:30 AM will be followed by a committal service at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 25.
