West Springfield, Carol E. Smith, 77, passed away November 18, 2023, surrounded by her loving family and close friends at Baystate Medical Center. Born on June 10, 1946, in Springfield, MA. She was the daughter of the late Norman T. and Barbara McClelland Smith. She will be sadly missed by her beloved brother, Norman Smith of West Springfield, MA, her close friends, including her “garden understudy” Melissa, and her dog scooter. A 1964, graduate of West Springfield High School. In 1968, graduated with a Bachelor of Science from American International College. In 1972, she graduated with a Master of Education from American International College. Carol taught for 25 years in the East Longmeadow School System, inspiring her students to fulfill their life long dreams. She was a member of the Red Oak Church, where she tended the gardens. Carol devoted herself tirelessly to the preservation of the town cemeteries with a focus on veterans. She was also a member of the historical commission where she assisted at the Altamont House, the town museum. Carol was an avid skier, gardener, traveler and family historian. Calling hours are Monday November 27, 2023, from 4-6PM at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St West Springfield, MA. A Celebration of Carol’s life will be held Tuesday November 28, 2023, 10:30AM at the Red Oak Church 337 Piper Rd, West Springfield, MA with burial to follow in Meeting House Hill Cemetery (White Church Cemetery) Elm Street, West Springfield, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Oak Members in Need fund, 337 Piper Rd, West Springfield, MA.
