Obituary
David Perritt Cronin 81 died in his sleep at Mercy Hospital on Wednesday January 17th after a brief illness. He was born in Springfield, MA on March 13, 1937, the son of Paul J. Cronin and Irene M. (Haggerty) Cronin. David grew up on Liberty Street in the Liberty Heights section of Springfield. Due to severe mental developmental disabilities which prevented him from attending school or building a life outside the home, David was nurtured lovingly at home by his parents, grandparents, sister, uncles and extended family. David moved to West Springfield with his parents and two uncles in 1967. David was our family’s angel, and he found happiness in music, walks outside, favorite foods and in the care he received from those who loved him. His adoring mother cared for him at home until she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 99; most recently, his devoted sister Mary cared for David at home for ten years until her recent illness. David created a legacy of unconditional love, both given and received. He taught us all the importance of kindness, appreciating the small but significant joys in life and respecting the dignity and contributions of all. David was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Irene Cronin, his uncles John, Bernard and Jerome Jr. and his wife Frances, and his brother-in-law Lawrence M. Dowd. He leaves his devoted sister Mary Cronin Dowd, his nephew Lawrence M. Dowd II (Diana) of Kennesaw, GA, nieces MaryAustin Dowd (George Calvert) of Scarborough, ME and Deirdre Dowd Levine (Gary) of Needham, MA, grandnephews/niece Niall Cronin Calvert, Kaila Shaelyn Dowd and Colin Lawrence Levine, and a cousin Jerome J. Haggerty III (Lyn) and their children Shawna and Patrick. The family would like to thank relatives, friends and neighbors for their support of David and Mary throughout these recent challenging years. Visiting hours will be at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield. Burial following the service will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Jericho:
