On Tuesday, March 23rd, Diane Calchera Novak of West Springfield passed away after a brief illness at the age of 89.  Born on October 31, 1931 in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, Diane was preceded in death only 7 weeks prior when her beloved husband of 65 years Edward passed away due to COVID-19. Diane also has one remaining sister, Constance Swatik, living in Stafford Springs, CT.Diane was a devoted elementary school teacher for over 40 years, and taught third grade in Southampton, MA for nearly 35 years.  She experienced great happiness when she ran into old students’ years after their third-grade experience. Diane was a passionate reader and library lover, creating the original children’s section of Edwards Library in Southampton. On any summer day you would find Diane leaving the Southampton or Easthampton public libraries with an armful of books for the following week’s reading. Diane was a huge baseball fan, and she and her husband Ed religiously watched every Red Sox game broadcasted. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends, and every student who had the pleasure of her classroom.
