Donald Gardner Wright, born on February 28, 1927 in Springfield, Massachusetts, peacefully passed away on January 15, 2024 surrounded by his family. Donald, lovingly known as “The Duck,” grew up in Springfield where he graduated from Technical High School. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where his boxing career began. After the war, Donald went professional as a welterweight boxer, fighting mostly in Thompsonville, CT. Often known as “Chalky” by some, he proudly served as a Springfield Firefighter, what he considered to be the best job in the world. Donald also owned a window cleaning company which he finally retired from at the age of 80. Donald spent most of his retirement working out at the Y and then at the Elks in his later years.
Donald was a hardworking man and avid gym rat, but most importantly, he loved making memories with his grandchildren. “Boppy” was the best grandfather and great grandfather around, always having the best toys and treats for all the kids, things parents won’t buy. He could always bring laughter to the room. Donald loved spending his summers on the lake in Otis, roasting marshmallows and floating with his grandkids. If you didn’t see him by the fire, you could certainly find him mowing the lawn, picking weeds, or smoking a cigar on the dock.
Donald is survived by his beloved son Thomas Wright and daughter-in-law Louise, his cherished grandchildren Bryan Wright, Lindsay Katz and husband Adam, and Jaclyn Wright, and his great-grandchildren, Lillian Wright, Lucas Wright, Logan Wright, Ryder Katz and Emma Katz. He is also survived by daughter Kathleen Nadeau, her husband Pete and their children, Eric and Laura. He is predeceased by his mother, Velma Wright, father, Robert Wright, wife, Virginia Wright, brother, Robert and his wife Jane Wright, and daughter, Diane Wright. A Funeral Home Service will be held Tuesday January 23, 2024 at 11:30AM at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home 1043 Westfield St West Springfield with a calling hour from 10:30-11:30AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army 170 Pearl St Springfield, MA. 01101.
