Longtime West Springfield resident Elsie B. Cascella, RN, 99, died peacefully on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center. Born in North Plymouth, MA to the late Antonio and Prima (Scagliarini) Masi, she was a Registered Nurse and worked for several hospitals in Springfield and Florida. She attended Girls High School in Brooklyn, NY and Brooklyn School of Nursing. In 1945 she moved to Springfield and worked at Wesson Maternity at Baystate Medical Center for many years. Elsie remained a loyal, lifelong Yankees fan and frequently communicated with former owner George Steinbrenner. She was predeceased by her husband Rockwell J. Cascella, her brother Edward Masi and her sister Edna Gorman. She is survived by her daughter Martha Smith and her husband Peter Most of Holyoke, her son Michael Cascella and his wife Lauren Cascella of Bristol, CT, a niece Doreen Boon of Spain, nephew William Sherwood of Ware, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren including her namesake Elsie Maureen Fowler, and many cousins in Ferrara and Bolgna, Italy. Visitation will be Friday from 8:30-9:30 AM at Toomey O�Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., West Springfield, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, West Springfield. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. The family would like to thank Baystate Medical Center Hospice Unit for their compassionate and loving care of Elsie. The family would also like to thank Sarawood Retirement Home where Elsie resided, for their care and friendship. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor�s choice.
