Obituary
Emanuel “Manny” Galicia Asinas passed away at Holyoke Medical Center, Holyoke, Massachusetts on the 11th of April 2020. He was 69 years old. Manny was born on the 15th of December 1950, in Catbalogan City, the capital of the Province of Samar, Philippines. He grew up in Manila, and was graduated from Mapúa University, the Philippines' premier engineering and technological school in Manila, with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1988, at the age of 38, he immigrated to the US with the help of his oldest brother, Augusto Galicia Asinas, MD, and subsequently became a US Citizen. Manny was predeceased by his beloved wife, Asuncion Solidum “Sogie” Asinas, who passed away at the age of 64 on the 1st of April 2020.  The two had lived in West Springfield, Massachusetts for the past 32 years. The seventh of ten children, he is predeceased by his brothers Pedrito Galicia Asinas, Timoteo “Lolong” Galicia Asinas, Larry Asinas, and sister, Susan Asinas.  He is survived by Augusto and his sister-in-law, Joan Asinas, formerly of West Springfield and now of Suffield, Connecticut, his sister Joselina “Nene” Asinas Villanueva of Lutz, Florida, his sister Solita Asinas Delarosa, his brother Fidelino “Boy” Galicia Asinas, and his sister Maribel Asinas, all three of whom reside in the Philippines. Manny was an easy-going, kind, gregarious, and big-hearted man who was always smiling and laughing, singing and humming. It is difficult to describe Manny in isolation because he and Sogie came as a pair. They were inseparable and rarely seen apart. Together, they brought a warmth and abundance of love to everyone in their lives. They prioritized spending time with family and friends, making sure they were in attendance for every special occasion and holiday. Manny and Sogie enjoyed the friendly competition and human connection of playing games like Mahjong and poker, and the thrill of making special trips to the local casinos.  They were humble and devoted parishioners of the St. Thomas Church in West Springfield and attended Sunday services regularly. Both have left behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who loved their Uncle Manny and Aunt Sogie deeply, in addition to dear friends including Vernie, Grace, Samantha, and Nicole Santiago and many others, the Filipino community in which they were active and much loved, their kind neighbors, and caring work colleagues. It is beyond our capacity to imagine the world without them. Manny will be buried beside Sogie in the St. Thomas Cemetery in West Springfield.  A memorial service will be planned for a later date.  All arrangements are being handled by the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home. Donations may be made to St. Thomas Church, 47 Pine St., West Springfield, MA 01089 or to Holyoke Medical Center at www.holyokehealth.com/Give-Now/Donate or by check made payable to Valley Health Systems, Inc., to Valley Health Systems, Development Department, 20 Hospital Drive, Holyoke MA 01040.
