Eugene J Starzic

Eugene J. “Yogi” Starzic, 87, passed away February 3, 2023, at Mercy Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Westfield, October 15, 1935, the son of the late John W. and Eva (Bela) Starzic. He was a graduate of the former Westfield Trade School. Eugene owned and operated Starzic’s Service Station in West Springfield for many years. He was a proud US Navy veteran during the Vietnam Era and was a communicant of the former Immaculate Conception Church. His many interests included stock car racing at Riverside Speedway, candlepin bowling, fishing on Harrisville Pond, and was an avid Red Sox fan. He loved entertaining his many friends and family at the Starzic family cottage in Harrisville, NH, creating lasting memories of good old summertime fun at the lake cottage. He leaves his beloved wife of 65 years, Virginia L. (Burt), his sister, Irene Borsuk of Easthampton and his beloved grandson, Benjamin and his daughter in law, Melanie Starzic. He was predeceased by his son, Scott in 2020 and his son, John in 2016. He leaves his sister in law, Carole Burt of Zehpyrhills, FL. Eugene was the proud uncle to many nieces and nephews who will dearly miss “Uncle Yogi”. In addition, Eugene leaves a great many friends and will be missed by all who knew him. Eugene’s family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital for their compassionate care of Eugene. He was a frequent guest at Mercy and always had a joke to tell and a smile to share. We would also like to thank the family and friends who supported us, we are grateful and we love you. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family for Eugene’s committal service with military honors on Friday February 10, 2023, at 9AM at the Mass Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Jericho, the Bureau for Exceptional Children and Adults, 537 Northampton St P.O. Box 1039 Holyoke, MA 01041. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
