Frederick M. Shannon, Sr. passed away on December 4. He was 91 years old. Born in Springfield on December 6, 1933, he was one of 5 children born to the late Walter and Mary (King) Shannon. In 1971 Frederick and the children moved from Palmer to West Springfield when Frederick married the love of his life, Mary.
Frederick was a Korean War era veteran of the US Marines. After his military service, he was conferred a degree in Agricultural Services from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He was known as a dedicated worker having served the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Montana Forestry Services and worked along side his brother for the Sisters of St. Joseph at Mont Marie in Holyoke.
Frederick was an accomplished sailor and spent countless hours pleasure sailing with family and friends. He taught classes in navigation and engine maintenance for the Springfield Power Squadron. Frederick was predeceased by his brother Walter Shannon. He will be missed by his loving wife Mary (Mitrowski) Shannon, sons Frederick Shannon, Jr of Ware, Christopher Shannon of FL, Steven Shannon of Springfield, his daughter Marylee Foisy of West Springfield; his brother David Shannon of Holyoke, sisters Grace Sampson of NJ and Mary Frances Flynn of CT, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A Committal Service is scheduled at 9am on Monday, December 15 at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. All services have been entrusted to TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME.
