Obituary
George Washington Boulia, 75, passed away March 19, 2021. He was born in Holyoke, MA as the son of Andrew and Mary (Denver) Boulia. He grew up in West Springfield, MA and graduated from West Springfield High School. George was a man that exuded goodwill and selflessness in every aspect of his life. He was well known for his light-heartedness, charisma and ability to make everyone around him laugh and feel comfortable. He always put others before himself and the care he held for others was commendable. From a young age he was regarded as adventurous and courageous. After the passing of his father, at the age of 18, he made the brave decision to defend his nation at a time of international distress. George joined the Marine Corps in 1964 and became a unit member of the 1st Battalion 9th Marines Delta Squad, known as Delta 1/9. In 1966 he was assigned to be stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam. Words cannot describe the trials, obstacles and difficult choices that he endured during this time. Delta 1/9 sustained the highest casualty rate in Marine Corps history, which earned them the nickname “The Walking Dead”. What can be said is that he expressed the utmost valor and gallantry during his time in the field and was awarded several medals and ribbons for such action. After he successfully fulfilled his role as Fire Captain in the field, at the end of 1966, he returned home as a distinguished veteran. Soon after his return he met Janet Mongeau whom he married then later divorced. Together they had three sons, John, Joseph and Jason. George eventually became a firefighter at the West Springfield Fire Department. He always had a knack for working with his hands and used his skills in trade work throughout his life. In the late 1990’s he moved to Greenfield, MA where he remained as a long-time resident. He is survived by his sisters Catherine Jean Carter, Bernadette Argiro, Elizabeth Mizzoni; his sons, John, Joseph and wife Kelley, Jason and his wife Natalie; his grandchildren, Ashley, Joseph, Cheyanna, Sofia, Luccas and Victoria; great-granddaughter, Gracie; he was predeceased by his parents and his siblings Leona, Paul, Andrew, Mary, Arthur and Virginia Marguerite. He was well known for his kind soul, quick wit and sense of humor. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to meet him. A Calling Hour will be on Monday 1 – 2 PM at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield St., West Springfield. Burial will be held in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery for his family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of George can be sent to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
