Obituary
Gerald J. Carney, 74, a longtime resident of Jeffrey Lane in West Springfield was called safely home on Thursday, March 4, 2021. He passed peacefully into eternal life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by his loving children. He was born in Springfield on October 12, 1946, a beloved son of the late Joseph and Doris (Fontaine) Carney. He was raised in Aldenville and graduated from Saint Joan of Arc Grammar School and Chicopee Comprehensive High School - Class of 1964. He attended Holyoke Community College briefly prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ. Having proudly served his country, he returned home to Aldenville in January 1970. It was soon after that he would meet his future wife through mutual friends. He married Claire Berube on July 7, 1973. They would go on to raise 5 children of whom he was very proud and considered his greatest accomplishment in life. He pursued his college education through night school as he worked during the day and was raising his family. He proudly earned his BA in 1976 and his MBA in 1979 both from American International College. He worked in management as a sales engineer for numerous small machine tool shops over his career. He was a people person and very much enjoyed talking to customers and travelling across his sales regions in New England. During retirement, he and Claire enjoyed many trips across the United States always exploring new places and getting out of the New England snow. He was an active volunteer during his retirement serving as a SHINE Counselor in Greater Western Massachusetts for many years. Gerry was an avid New England Patriots and Red Sox fan and was always ready to watch a good game. He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield for over 40 years volunteering as a longtime CCD teacher and a 50-year member of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337.

He leaves his loving wife and best friend of 47 years, Claire (Berube) Carney; his five beloved children whom he loved with all his heart – Christine (Carney) Crowell and her husband Kevin of Mansfield, Kimberly (Carney) Renaud and her husband William of Chicopee, Andrew Carney, Jeffrey Carney, and Daniel Carney – all of West Springfield; five cherished grandchildren, Benjamin and Natalie Crowell, Allyssa and Gianni Renaud, and Liam Drost; one dear brother and sister-in-law, John and Nancy Carney of Feeding Hills; and his many dear nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
