Obituary
Helen Julia (Celatka) Ryan, 102, formerly of Brookline Avenue passed away Monday, April 26th at Heritage Hall West in Agawam. She was born in Hatfield, MA on February 22, 1919 to the late Peter and Julia (Niedzwiecki) Celatka and lived most of her life in West Springfield. She worked and retired from the former Third National Bank in West Springfield. Helen was a longtime communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield. She was a supporter of the Parish Cupboard (formerly Open Pantry) in West Springfield. Helen enjoyed cooking and baking and did so for many years for the Cupboard. She also used her knitting skills making countless hats and mittens for Brightside over the years. Helen enjoyed watching the Red Sox, playing cards and Scrabble with friends, going to the casino and reading.
She was the beloved widow of Walter J. Ryan (1992), loving mother of Madeline DeVasier and her husband Martin of Westfield, daughter-in-law Kathleen Ryan, widow of Michael E. Ryan of Charlestown, RI and Martha Ryan of Pittsfield. The devoted “Grammy” of Michael J. Ryan and Kelly Brannigan, Christopher DeVasier and husband Joseph, Jeanne Hebert and husband Michael. She was predeceased by granddaughter Michelle DeVasier and grandson Daniel Ryan. Loving great-grandmother of Kelsey, Brendan, James, Michael, Alicia, Eric, Ryan, Avery, and Cameron. Great-great-grandmother of Grayson. She also leaves a very special niece, Lucille Flossic of Pittsfield.
The family would like to thank everyone at Heritage Hall West for the care and compassion they gave Helen during her stay there. All funeral arrangements are private and burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s name may be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
