On Wednesday July 10th, Howard W. Courtney passed peacefully at home surrounded by family. He was born December 3, 1948, in Springfield. Howard was a proud combat veteran, serving in the navy during the Vietnam war. He was a Plane Captain for Attack Squadron 75 on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga. After his service, Howard worked until retirement at the U.S. Postal Service. He was a big sports fan, especially of the Red Sox and Patriots. Family always came first and was Howard’s greatest joy. Being surrounded by family and good friends was his favorite pastime whether it was camping, backyard BBQ's, coaching soccer, trips to Fenway or a simple game of cards. He leaves his sister, Judith Bleau and her husband Dennis. His children Theresa Verdon, Sean and his wife Suzanne. His daughter-in-law Diane and brother-in-law Bill Taylor. His grandchildren Jacob, Rebecca, Christian, Rachael, Danielle and her husband Nick, Aaron and Riley. His great grandchildren Jaxin and Jameson. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends. Howard was predeceased by his beloved wife Diane, his son Howard Jr., and his grandson Justin Messier. At Howard’s request there will be no calling hours, but a small ceremony will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Agawam on Thursday July 18th at 9am and all are welcome. The Toomey-O'Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Baystate Hospice or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
