Obituary
James W. Lyons, 67, former Town Engineer for West Springfield, passed away on Sunday, May 3 after a long illness. Jim died at home in West Springfield surrounded by his loving family who were providing care for him. He was born in Springfield on July 31, 1952 to late John F. Lyons (former Springfield chief of police) and Katherine (Sweeney) Lyons. Jim was raised in Sixteen Acres and graduated from Cathedral High School. He attended Northeastern University in Boston where he received a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering. After several years working in the nuclear industry, Jim shifted his professional focus to civil engineering working for the state, and later for local municipal government. He retired in 2016 from the West Springfield DPW after 27 years as the town engineer. Jim was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee where he was active in Men’s Group and Ministry of Care. An enthusiastic fisherman, he loved spending time with a rod in his hands. However, Jim’s main focus was always his family, spending his time and attention on whatever was needed at that moment, and enjoying even the simplest of activities with them. His presence will be greatly missed by his wife, Rosanne (Fitzgerald) Lyons and sons Joseph and Patrick. Private graveside services are planned. Memorial mass will be scheduled at a later date. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Ministry of Care, St. Stanislaus Basilica Parish Office, 40 Cyman Drive, Chicopee, MA 01013
