Obituary

Janice Sullivan Boyer, 71, of Longmeadow, died peacefully at home on February 23, 2026, after a long illness.

The daughter of the late Richard and Carol (Bradley) Sullivan of West Springfield and Longmeadow, Janice was born in Springfield and raised in West Springfield. She was a member of the final graduating class of Ursuline Academy.

While raising three young children, Janice made the decision to return to college, earning a B.S. in Mathematics cum laude from American International College. She went on to become a beloved math teacher at Longmeadow High School, where she taught for several years before discovering her true calling: one-on-one tutoring. Through tutoring, she combined her love of mathematics with patience, warmth, and encouragement, helping countless students build confidence and succeed. She continued tutoring until her retirement.

Janice had a lifelong love of bridge and other card games, cooking, and spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed the beach and spent many happy summers at Groton Long Point, Connecticut.

Janice is survived by her husband of 41 years, Andrew Boyer of Longmeadow; her children, Shelley Barandes (Jacob) of Cambridge, Lisa Lavin of Wisconsin, and Brandon Boyer of Springfield; her grandchildren, Sadie and Emily Barandes; her sister, Patricia Gardner of New Hampshire; her brother, George Sullivan of Florida; her former husband, Robert Lavin (Margaret) of East Longmeadow, father of Shelley and Lisa; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Carol Ann Sullivan of West Springfield.

Calling hours will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Monday, March 2 at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home in West Springfield. No funeral service is planned.
