Jean Mary Thompson, 77, died May 29, 2024 at home. She was born in Albany, N.Y. to the late J. Ralph and Lillian (O’Toole)Thompson.
As a young child they moved to Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and then eventually settled in West Springfield where she graduated from West Springfield High School. She then went on to earn her bachelors degree at the Lawrence General Hospital school of nursing class of 1968. Jean worked at Baystate Medical Center as a pediatric RN where she retired after a career of more than 40 years. Jean spent her life caring for others and made a significant difference in her young patients’ lives. As witnessed by the many loving letters she had received. Jean was always there for her mother and father, and never left their sides during their final years.
In her younger days she took great joy traveling abroad. She was especially interested in her Irish heritage and she spent many an hour researching it. Jean always had the greatest interest for the latest technology and gadgets. She also was an avid knitter, making hundreds of beautiful items that she then donated to several different organizations.
She was an extremely generous person, contributing to many charities. She was a long time and faithful communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield.
Jean will be sadly missed by her devoted cousins; Lois Vigneault and Mark Eaton of Upton, MA , Richard A. Vigneault and his wife Gail of Port St. Lucie FL, Janet Vigneault of Shrewsbury, MA, Carolyn Cordeiro of West Hartford, CT, and Christopher Cordeiro of Chapel Hill, NC. Family and friends may meet for Jean‘s Funeral Mass on Friday, June 20th at 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine St., West Springfield. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery, West Springfield. Toomey O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
