West Springfield, Joan M. (Delaney) Messer, 92, passed away after the long goodbye of Alzheimers on Sat., June 17, 2023. Born August 29, 1930, to the late Leon J. and Elise B. (Desmarais) Delaney. She was a lifetime resident of West Springfield and graduated from the Immaculate Conception School in 1944 and West Springfield High School in 1948. She graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of X-Ray Technology in 1949 and worked at the former Westfield State Sanitorium and then for Drs. Horrrigan, Turner and Alicandri in Springfield. After raising her family, she worked at Westbank as a teller and eventually branch manager. She also worked at the West Springfield Municipal Employees Credit Union until her retirement. She was a member of the AARP, Ramapogue Historical Society, former Providence Hospital Auxiliary, St. Thomas Women’s Club and Mt. Carmel Choir, the West Springfield Square Dance Club and Waltz Whirlers Round Dance Club. She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Highland Lake in Goshen. Her beloved husband of 70 years James Messer died in 2021. She leaves her loving sons, James and his wife Mary of London, England, John and his wife Laurie of West Springfield, Jeffrey and his wife Dianne of New Smyrna, FL, Jay and his wife Sheila of Santa Rosa, CA, and Joseph and his wife Kathy of Orleans, MA, her beloved sister, Ann Paier of West Springfield, her grandchildren; Angie, Evan, Marisa, Deena, Jason, Sara, Gregory, Blaze, Douglas, Jennifer, and Joshua, he great grandchildren; Christopher, Chase, Cali, Caster, Callan, Rylee, Mallory, Lucy, Ruby, Zephyra, and Zakai, and her great great granddaughter, Olivia. She also leaves several nieces and nephews, and she was predeceased by her sister Frances Bartlett in 2001. The calling hours will be Monday from 9 – 11 am at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 am at St. Thomas Church. Burial will be at St, Thomas Cemetery.
