West Springfield- Joan Frances (O’Brien) Patten, 82, of Ely Avenue passed away Tuesday. She was born in Holyoke on August 20, 1940 to the late Florence (Morin) and former West Springfield Police Chief John B. O’Brien, Sr. She lived all of her life in West Springfield and was a 1957 graduate of West Springfield High School. Joan worked as Health Inspector for the Town of West Springfield and later on she was elected to the West Springfield Board of Health. Prior to that she worked at several local Hallmark stores. She served for decades on the West Springfield Irish Parade Committee and in 2019 was the recipient of the Jinx Powers Award. She was an avid New England Sports fan. Joan enjoyed camping and boating, which she did for years. Her greatest love was her family and the time spent with them. She was the beloved widow of O. Daniel Patten who passed away in 2016, loving mother of Deborah Heady and her husband Shane of West Springfield, Daniel Patten and his wife Lynn of New Bedford, MA, Karen Roberts and her husband Darryll of Chicopee, and Jody Weidler of Wales. She was the devoted grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of 9. Joan also leaves several nieces and nephews and was predeceased by her son-in-law James Weidler (2011) and her two siblings, John “Jack” O’Brien and Marilyn McGilpin. The calling hours are Sunday from 12 Noon-2:30 pm at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield. The funeral will be Monday 11:30 am at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:30 pm at St. Thomas Church. The Committal Service will be at 2 am at the Massachusetts Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam.
