John Thomas Gilmartin, 71, passed peacefully on Friday September 4, 2026, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, to the late James J. and Mary (Lovett) Gilmartin, he was a 1972 graduate of East Longmeadow High School, where his love for baseball blossomed. John worked as a restaurant manager at local restaurants until his retirement. A loyal man, he managed Abdow’s for 18 years, Bertucci’s for 10 years, and Applebee’s for 9 years. During his retirement, John enjoyed camping, playing in poker tournaments, running card leagues, and his monthly “Breakfast Club” outings with lifelong friends. John saw life in numbers and statistics, so his card savvy came naturally. Often remembered for his sarcasm and quick wit, his family will remember his gentle nature and unending calm. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of just shy of 43 years, Lori (DuFresne) Gilmartin; his daughters and their families- Elizabeth Gilmartin with sons Tripp and Levi, Kaitlin Kenyon with husband Jason and their daughter and son, Elliot and Henry, respectively; and Amelia Cadieux with husband Steven; and his siblings - Kevin Gilmartin with wife Cassie, James J. Gilmartin, and Kate O’gorman. In addition to his parents, John was also predeceased by his sister Maryellen Hopkins. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Toomey O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
