John V Rattelsdorfer

John passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024 at Mont Marie Nursing Home in Holyoke. He was born on January 25, 1942, to the late Thomas and Evelyn Rattelsdorfer and was a life-long resident of West Springfield. John attended West Springfield schools and was a graduate of STCC. He proudly served in the US Army from 1960-63. He worked locally as a glazier for many years, and was president and business agent for the Glaziers Union, Local 369. He leaves his son Steven and wife Paige. He is predeceased by his son Jack in 2020 and sister Nancy Fearn in 1994. John is survived by 5 brothers and sisters: Merle (John) Samson, Charlene (Bill) Joseph, Ellen (Bill) Butler, Kathy (Rick) Manley, and Tom Rattelsdorfer. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was a devoted sports fan and especially enjoyed golf. John was a competitive golfer at area golf courses for over 50 years. He was proud of his six holes-in-one scored at area courses. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed WWII history. Special thanks to his brother in law Bill Joseph and ex-wife Loretta: Bill for his companionship and many rides to appointment, and Loretta for her patience and companionship. John had many in-home caretakers provided by the VA without whom he couldn’t have stayed in his home for as long as he did. His family extends their gratitude to the staff at Mont Marie and Beacon Hospice. In lieu of flowers, John’s family is requesting that donations in John’s memory be made to Shriner’s Children New England, Attn: Donations, 516 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104 or TJ O’Connor Adoption Center, 627 Cottage St, Springfield, MA 01104. Friends and family are invited on Nov. 1st for calling hours from 11:00-12:00; followed by the funeral service at 12:00, both at Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home 1043 Westfield St West Springfield. Committal service to follow at Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam.
