Obituary
John A. Wilson, 85, passed away on January 1, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada on Jan. 13, 1936 to the late John F. and Irene (Whitty) Wilson. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church in West Springfield. At the age of 17, John traveled with his brother Henry from Prince Edward Island to Massachusetts to find work. He started as a stock boy at First National Supermarket outside of Boston. John married Clara S. MacInnis, also of St. Peter’s Bay, PEI on July 4, 1956. After settling in Medford, MA to start his family, John went to work at Raymond’s Department Store, where he worked as a stock boy, a floor manager and then carpet sales, and eventually became a carpet layer. The family moved to West Springfield in 1975, and John changed careers when he started working as a machinist in Westover at Quabbin Industries, and then Hole Specialists before retiring. John enjoyed reading the daily newspaper, watching old westerns and listening to Scottish fiddle music. John also enjoyed socializing, and after retiring, could be seen at the Food Bag in W. Springfield early most mornings, and in later years he would also frequent the Target Starbucks at Holyoke Mall, drinking coffee and visiting with his friends. He especially loved his yearly trips back to Prince Edward Island with his wife Clara before her passing in 2010, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. John is predeceased by his wife Clara S. (MacInnis) Wilson and son Mark J. Wilson, brother Louis Wilson of St. Peter’s Bay, PEI, Canada, and sister Joan Wilson and brother Henry Wilson, both of Rowley, MA. John is survived by his children John F. Wilson and his wife Paula of W. Springfield, Joan Roy and husband Reynold of Delaplane, VA, and Susanne Alexopoulos and her husband Manny of Westfield, and his cherished grandchildren Megan, Jessica, Sarah, George and Angela; his brother Raymond Wilson and wife Bernie of St. Peter’s Bay, PEI, Canada; his sister Irma Barrett of Rowley, MA; and many loving nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be held Monday, January 10, 2022 at 11:30 from St Thomas Church, 47 Pine St., West Springfield. Burial will be private and the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
