Obituary
Joseph Paier, Jr. passed away Monday at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 12, 1931 to the late Giuseppi and Giovanna (Ceschin) Paier. Joe was a lifetime resident of West Springfield and graduated from West Springfield High School in 1949. He was a Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War in the Seabees. He was employed by New England Telephone Company retiring in 1986 after 30 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield. He was a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2212. He was also a member of the Ramapogue Historical Society, Telephone Pioneers of America and the Deadline Gang. He was an avid golfer, played in the Senior Hockey League in Springfield, and was inducted into the Rink Rats at the Mass Mutual Center. He leaves his loving wife of 63 years, M. Ann (Delaney) Paier, a daughter, Catherine J. Manzon and her husband Domingo of Jacksonville, FL, a son, Joseph L. and his wife Anja of West Springfield. He also leaves two grandchildren, Joseph V. and Elise A. Paier, who were his whole world and pride and joy. He also leaves a brother Aldo L. of West Springfield, a sister-in-law, Joan Messer and her husband Jim, plus several nieces and nephews. A brother, Otto and sisters-in-law, Geri Paier and Shirley Paier predeceased him. The family would like to thank the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home for all the love and care they showed Joe during his time there. The calling hours are Sunday from 1 – 4 pm at TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield St., West Springfield. There will be a Funeral Mass Monday at 10 am at St. Thomas Church. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
