Obituary
Mary Rita (Bailey) Boyer, 100, formerly a longtime resident of Greenleaf Avenue passed away Friday at Baystate Medical Center. Born on May 26, 1920 in Springfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Michael J Bailey and Emily (Donovan) Bailey. Mary was the oldest of 10 children, the last six born to Michael and Lydia (Manley) Bailey. Mary was educated in Springfield schools and later worked for the W. J. Woolworth Co. and for the American Bosch during World War II. From 1970 to 1983, Mary worked in the Art Department of Johnson’s Bookstore. Moving to West Springfield in 1950 with her family, Mary was over a 55-year communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish and a member of the Senior’s Club. For many years, she was manager of the Parish’s Loaves and Fishes program. Mary was predeceased by her husband Henry J. Boyer and siblings Theresa (Bailey) Smrecek, Doris (Bailey) Hayes and Edward M. Bailey. She was the loving mother of Janet A. Hourihan and her husband J. Kevin of Agawam and Michael H. Boyer and his wife Pamela of East Longmeadow, devoted grandmother of Timothy J. Hourihan, Theresa E. Rondeau, Evan M. Boyer, M. Spencer Boyer and Adrienne C. Thibodeau, cherished great grandmother of Connor Hourihan, Liam Hourihan, Henry Rondeau, Olivia Boyer, and Brooks Boyer, caring sister of Michael Bailey, M. Judith Dasso, L. Ellen Gallacher, Susan Rousseau, Rosemary Brodeaur, and Mark Bailey. There will be a Calling Hour from 10-11 AM SATURDAY at the TOOMEY- O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM in St. Thomas Church, 47 Pine St., W. Springfield. The burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Mary’s name may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or to the St. Thomas School Development Fund, 75 Pine Street, West Springfield, MA 01089. Due to Covid Restrictions, a mask is required at both services.
