Mary Jane 'Janie' (Doyle) Eglin, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, died peacefully on October 16, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on June 2, 1935, to Moses and Ann (Haggerty) Doyle, Mary Jane grew up in Torrington, Connecticut. She attended Lauralton Hall before graduating from the College of New Rochelle with her bachelor's degree in Education.
After marrying her beloved husband, Adam E. Eglin, Janie moved to Springfield, where she taught in the Springfield School District, before going to help manage Adam's Drugstore on Page Boulevard. Known for her warmth and kindness, she became a cherished pillar of the community. After the closure of the drugstore, she had a long and fulfilling career at Mass Mutual, where her intelligence and work-ethic shone brightly.
Janie was a devout Catholic and Extraordinary Minister, whose faith guided her throughout her life and often attended Sacred Heart and St. Thomas parishes with her family in tow. She was a passionate reader who gave the best recommendations, and she never missed an episode of Jeopardy (everyone knew not to call at 7:30!) She loved traveling and literally went all around the world. She delighted in exploring new places and trying new foods with her family and friends. She especially loved spending time in St. Croix (it's hard to believe she'd prefer the Caribbean over New England winters, I know). Her curious nature and sharp wit made her an absolute joy to be around, and her cheeky sense of humor endeared her to many. You, however, could endear yourself to her by making her a well-made Manhattan.
Janie was preceded in death by her dear husband Adam E. Eglin, and her son Mark D. Eglin, as well as her siblings Thomas Doyle, Patricia A. (Doyle) Rzewnicki, and Robert W. Doyle. She is survived by her loving sister, Madelyn Riccardi, as well as her children Thomas Eglin and his wife Lisa, Kathleen (Eglin) Hart and her husband William Sr., and Timothy Eglin and his wife Amy. Her nine cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alison, Andrew, Caitlin, Geena, William Jr., Shannon, Sara, and Adam will forever hold her memory dear. Janie had a large, loving family and a multitude of friends, who will miss her profoundly.
A celebration of Mary Jane's life will be held on October 25, 2024, at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield at 11:30, followed by a luncheon, where family and friends can gather to share stories and raise a glass in her honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund or to the West Springfield Public Library, in her honor. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mary Jane's legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
