Obituary
Mary passed away peacefully and without pain on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, in the home that she loved. She was born in New York City in 1926, the youngest child (“wee Mary”) of the late Patrick and Teresa Healy, immigrants from Scotland. Mary graduated from Cathedral High School (NYC) in 1943 and Grace Institute the next year. She went to work in 1944 as a legal secretary in an insurance firm and witnessed the celebration of the end of WWII from the windows of Rockefeller Center. Mary married John Hourihan in 1948 and they soon became parents to three sons, Jim, Mike and Pat. In 1953 the moved from Washington Heights in Manhattan to West Springfield and built the house they would live in for their married lives. Beginning in 1965, Mary went to work as a secretary for the next 18 years at the Passionist Fathers Retreat House in West Springfield. John retired in 1983 and they traveled to Ireland, Scotland, Lourdes and Medjugorje a number of times. John died in 1996, but he has lived on every day since then in the hearts and minds of Mary and their family, and in the pictures of him and them all over the house. Mary attended daily Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church and was a member of the parish rosary group for many years. She also volunteered at Birthright for more than 15 years. Mary was the last surviving member of her generation in the family, a family who will always remember her and love her: Son Jim (Adrienne), grandchildren Matt (Meredith), David and Christina, great-grandchildren Naomi, Jimmy and Kayleigh Hourihan; Son Mike (Eileen), grandchildren Tricia (Seth) Mias, Mike, John and Neil (Melissa), great-grandchildren Nolan, Molly and Finn Mias; Son Pat (Sandy), grandchildren Kate (Chris) Morrison, Tim (Christine), Brendan (Sue), Dan (Kristen) and Brian (Lauren), great-grandchildren Kayla, Christopher and Conor Morrison, Colin, Ryan, Emily, Alyson, Patrick, Maeve, Cooper, Quinn, Beckett and Declan Hourihan. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was predeceased by her brothers Frank and Vincent, by her sisters Teresa and Cecilia and by her infant grandson, Patrick who died in 1977. Our family is profoundly grateful for the care and companionship of Mary’s caregivers for the past 7 months, Sue and Rose. There are no calling hours. The funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 11 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine Street West Springfield. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the John and Mary Hourihan Scholarship Fund c/o Sr. Patricia Hottin, St. Thomas School, 75 Pine St. West Springfield, MA. 01089. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
