Miriam C. Ellenwood (90) has gone home to be with her Savior and Lord on December 19, 2024 after breast cancer took its toll on her precious life. She was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, faithfully reading His Word and attending church.
Miriam, a.k.a. Mickey, was born March 28, 1934 to John and Olive Douglass Carto of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of eight children. She grew up in East Longmeadow and was a 1952 graduate of Springfield Technical High School and attended Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois.
Miriam married Winston (Lewis) Ellenwood of West Springfield, MA October 13, 1956. They lived the first few years in East Longmeadow and moved to West Springfield in May 1965. They were married almost 60 years and were blessed with three daughters. Miriam loved being a mother, bringing fun and laughter to the family. Her role as a fun-loving grandmother involved countless hours of babysitting.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Springfield, MA for sixty plus years and attended Oak Hill Bible Church, Oxford, MA in her later years.
Mickey’s career varied, working in banking, volunteering in the community and church, designing tailor-made sewing creations, upholstering, caning chairs, cooking and baking. Mickey was exceptionally creative, sharing this gift with the people in her life. Music played a major role in her life, playing both piano and pipe organ by ear and by sight. She played a key role as the church pianist and organist. In the summertime, both Mickey and her husband, Winston could often be found at Tanglewood enjoying Boston Symphony concerts.
Mickey was predeceased by her husband Winston in 2016. She leaves three daughters, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Surviving are her three daughters: Martha Kauppinen of Oxford, MA, Beth Edwards and her husband Todd of Scarborough, Maine and Mary Butova of Enfield, CT. Grandchildren are Eric, Kurt and Scott Kauppinen, Christie Devoe, Sarah and Marissa Edwards, Jason Butova and Shelby Butova-Rios. Great grandchildren are AJ and Sebastian Butova-Rios.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday January 19, 2025 3-4pm at Oak Hill Bible Church, 40 Sacarrrappa Road, Oxford, MA 01540
