Patricia Ann Smith of West Springfield, MA was born in Rochester, NY in 1938 to Marian Springer and G. Kenneth McDonald. Patricia’s Dad passed away when she was just 19, in her first year at in nursing school. She met Arthur B. Smith Jr, the love of her life Christmas caroling. He told her his name was Smithinski because he didn’t think she would believe his name was Smith. They married in 1960 and raised 4 children together. Family was everything to Pat. Art passed much too soon, in 2006, just 2 short years after they retired. Patricia graduated from Nazareth Academy and St Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, NY. A Member and communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, West Springfield since the 1960s. She was an extraordinary minister. Pat was a charge nurse at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Agawam for almost 30 years. She treated her patients there with tender loving care, just like family, and loved decorating the wing for Halloween. Pat is predeceased by her parents Marion (Springer) and G. Kenneth McDonald. Predeceased by her loving husband Arthur in 2006 after 46 years of loving marriage, her sister Peggy Hanss, brother Kenny McDonald, her brother-in-laws, Jim Hanss, Richard Smith, Francis Godin, Stephen Smith, sister-in-law Joan Smith and nephew David Godin. She will be missed and remembered by her 4 loving children and their spouses: Michael and Kathy Smith of Northampton, MA, Timothy and Karen Smith of Bow, NH, Mark and Jennifer Smith of West Springfield, MA and Theresa Smith and Mark Perry of Arlington, VA. Her Grandchildren: Sarah & Josh Partridge, Kara & Mark Pelletier, Christopher Smith, Luke Smith & Savannah Machamer, Tyler Smith & Allison Banas, Owen Smith, Quinn Smith-Perry, Marissa Smith, Eva Smith-Perry, Caitlin Smith, and Jana Smith-Perry and her great grandchildren: Fintan Partridge, and Nolan and Dean Pelletier. She leaves her sister-in-laws Eleanor Godin, Anne Smith, and Sylvia Smith, cousins Ruth and Neil Burke and many beloved nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend a very gracious thanks to the kind and caring staff at Baystate Hospice, the D’Amour Cancer Center in Springfield and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Donations in Patricia’s memory may be made to the Baystate Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 50 Maple Street, P.O. Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102. An avid reader, donations may also be made to the West Springfield public library in Patricia’s name. Hold on tight to the people you love. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held for Patricia Tuesday February 18, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine St. West Springfield. Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, February 17th from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home.
