Obituary
Peter R. Zucco (born Pietro Vincenzo), 92, of West Springfield, passed away on February 9, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, April 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Assunta (Gatto) Zucco. After his father passed, Peter was raised by his mother and step-father Domenico Macri. Peter grew up in the South End of Springfield. As a teenager, he played the accordion and shared his family’s love of music. He worked pumping gasoline and installing blinds. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. Peter returned home in 1953 and met the love of his life, Pearl Barre, who was working at his brother’s Packaging Service in Holyoke, MA. They married and raised six children in their West Springfield home. Peter found joy in keeping a vegetable in his backyard (aka Little Italy), that included a beautiful grapevine and fruit trees. Peter worked as a truck driver for Longview Fiber for over 30 years, was a member of the Local 404 Teamsters and a former member of the K of C. Peter loved to create limericks and pet names for his children and loved ones. He was always happy to see you and would sing the song that he created for you. He was proud of his Italian heritage and shared fond memories of his family traditions, such wine-making and homemade pasta and sausages. His beloved wife Pearl (Barre) Zucco died in 2017. Peter leaves six loving children: Dominic of West Springfield; Diane Zucco of West Springfield; Annette Zucco of Stowe, MA; Joanne Zucco of Agawam & her husband, David Gauthier; Barbara Zucco of South Hadley & her husband, Ronald Coutu; Judy Laporte of Ware and her husband, John; and his god-daughter Anne Musselwhite & her husband, David. Peter (Papu) will be remembered by his 15 loving grandchildren, and his 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Peter is pre-deceased by his wife, his parents and his eight siblings: Nicholas, Joseph, Bruno (Harry), Antoinette, Carmela, Frank, Ann and Rose. The funeral mass will be held Wednesday, February 16 at 11:30AM at St Thomas Church 47 Pine St West Springfield with calling hours from 9:30-11AM at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St, West Springfield. Burial will follow in St Thomas Cemetery. The family extends their heart-felt thanks to Peter’s caregivers: Amanda, Betsy, Deirdre, Jailene, Livina, Marla, Naideen, Nicole, Ruth & Sue. Donations may be made in his memory to the West Springfield Council on Aging, 128 Park Street West Springfield, MA 01089; St Jude Children’s Hospital; or Baystate Hospice 280 Chestnut St Springfield, MA 01199.
