Phil Tirrell passed away peacefully in his sleep on this holy day Sunday September 15, 2024 at age 94. His devotion to his wife Elizabeth of sixty-six years was evident to the end, as was his love for his four daughters: Melinda Donnelly, Jennifer Tirrell, Monica Messer and Emily Tirrell. Phil was a most sincere and dedicated husband, father, uncle, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He would gladly hop in his car to run an errand for friends and family, chauffeur people, or come to a friend’s aid, even if it was because you locked your keys in your running car. Phil’s compassion and empathy for people was boundless, unless of course you could not decide what donut you wanted while he waited for his coffee.
Phil graduated from St Anselm’s College and New England College School of Law. He practiced law in the Boston area throughout his legal career. Phil and his wife Betty moved from Waltham to West Springfield after Phil retired from his law practice. Phil enjoyed many sports over the years, particularly baseball and ice hockey. He skated into his 80’s in a recreational senior ice hockey league once he moved to the West Springfield area.
Phil’s faith was paramount to his life. He could often be seen doing stations of the cross, attending daily Mass at St Thomas or just reflecting. Most of all we will miss his wit and humor. His legacy will live on in his daughters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who enjoyed many laughs and stories together with him as he passed. The family is especially thankful for Phil’s devoted caregiver Donna Connor.
Phil was predeceased by seven of his siblings and is survived by his sister, Sister Patty Tirrell. He is also pre-deceased by his son-in-law James Donnelly and granddaughter Elspeth Donnelly.
Phil’s funeral mass will be held at 10am on Friday September 20, 2024 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield, Mass. The Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be private at the wishes of the family.
