Obituary
The daughter of Stephen J. and Sophie (Swotchak) Pitoniak, she was born in Westfield, MA in 1935. She was the wife of William A. Casey of West Springfield, who predeceased her in 1982.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Kenneth and Eileen (Casey) Hall of Gainesville, VA; Col. Michael and Theresa (Napolitan) Casey of Woodbury, MN; Michael and Julienne (Casey) Mishol of Longmeadow, MA; Mary Casey of West Boylston, MA; and Daniel and Eileen (Raymond) Casey of Estero, Florida. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, and her siblings, Philip Pitoniak of Westfield, MA; Eleanore Dinneen of Rochdale, MA; and Leo and Carolyn (Pitoniak) Pirola of Westfield, MA. She was predeceased by her brother Steven Pitoniak and sisters Marilyn Lockwood, Barbara Kochanek, and Joanne Perryman. She also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Western Massachusetts Hospital School of Nursing, she spent over 25 years working at Baystate Medical Center, where she specialized in endoscopy. A lover of travel, she visited her family’s ancestral village in Slovakia in the 1970s. She was a prolific writer and storyteller, and loved large family gatherings. Active in local politics, she was a West Springfield Library Trustee, candidate for Selectman, and a delegate to the 1976 Republican National Convention.
Visiting Hours will be at TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 WESTFIELD ST., on FRI October 15 from 5 to 7 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on SAT October 16 at 10:00AM in St. Thomas Church, followed by burial at St. Thomas Cemetery in West Springfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joann’s House of Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Florida or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
