Obituary
Richard (Richie) E. Kulig, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22 at Day Brook Village in Holyoke. He was born on December 24, 1934 to the late Albert and Anna (Borkowski) Kulig and lived all of his life on the family homestead on Piper Road. Richie graduated from West Springfield High School and served in the United States Marine Corp, he was honorably discharged in March 1956 with the rank of Sergeant. Richie received an Associate’s degree from Holyoke Community College in May 1958 and then began his career with the West Springfield Police Department. He attended various training classes at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, the FBI Law Enforcement Officers Training School, the National Command Training Institute, the Massachusetts State Police Training School, the Commonwealth of MA Department of the Attorney General, and the Command Training Institute at Babson. Richie retired in October 1983 with the rank of Captain of the Detective Bureau. He was an Executive Board member of the Massachusetts Police Association and a member of the West Springfield Police Relief Association.
Richie was a youth Baseball coach, Town meeting member, member of the West Springfield Agawam Elks Club, American Legion Post 207, Tatham Social Club, West Springfield Boys and Girls Club, and a member of the Shaker Farms Country Club. After his retirement, Richie enjoyed completing home improvement projects for family & friends assisted by his co-worker Ronnie Camp. Richie enjoyed vacationing in Aruba, traveling to Australia, Seattle, Florida, and Arizona. He enjoyed attending Polkabrations at Ocean Beach, hunting trips at the “Hornrunners” camp, trips to Hinsdale Raceway, Saratoga Raceway, Hartford Jai Alai, Mohegan Sun, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas. He enjoyed planting his garden and opening the pool every year on Memorial Day weekend. Richie entertained family and friends, poolside at the “Captains Corner” and in his basement bar which showcased his love of horse racing.
Richie was the loving husband of the late Ann (Hudzikiewicz) Kulig who passed away in January, beloved father of Donald Kulig and his wife Gail of Chandler, AZ and Joseph Kulig and his wife Liz of West Springfield, his daughter-in-law Yolli of Chandler, AZ, and devoted grandfather of Richard, Christopher, Joey, Tiffany, and Chanel. He was a caring brother of Laura Cincotta, Irene Karaskiewicz, Edward Kulig, Phyllis Barbanera. He was predeceased by his siblings; Catherine Brochu, Eleanor Plant, Helen Jason, and Donald Kulig.
The calling hours will be Monday from 4-6 pm at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield. We ask that all those attending services wear masks and observe social distancing guidelines. There will be a Funeral Home Service Tuesday at 11:30 am followed by a 1 pm Committal Service at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s name may be made to the Day Brook Village Activities Fund, 298 Jarvis Avenue, Holyoke, MA 01040 or to the West Springfield Police Assn., 26 Central Street, West Springfield, MA 01089.
