Richard Stanton Sullivan, 95, of West Springfield, Mass., passed away peacefully at home from natural causes on Feb 1, 2023. He was born on October 13, 1927, son of the late George Wilmer Sullivan and Elizabeth Stanton (“O’Neill”) Sullivan of West Springfield, Mass., one of nine children. He graduated from West Springfield High School in 1945 and after serving in the Army, he was married to the late Carol Eleanor Bradley Sullivan in 1950 for 64 years until her passing in 2015. He was a co-founder and leader of the family business, Sullivan Paper Company in West Springfield, for over 50 years. Active in local politics, he served on the West Springfield Board of Selectmen for six years, including as chairman, and chairman of the Finance Committee as well as numerous other town committees, too many to list. Richard was on the Board of Directors of Fountain Plating, Donut Dip, Multibank and several other Boards. He supported charitable causes such as the West Springfield Boys and Girls Club, the San Diego Zoo, West Springfield Rotary, and others. He received Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow recognition. When he wasn’t at a Red Sox game at Fenway, he was deep sea fishing. Richard help start the Annual Fishing Derby at the West Springfield Reservoir. Mr. Sullivan is survived by his son, George of Longmeadow, Mass.; daughter Patricia (Gardner) of Northwood, N.H.; and, daughter Janice (Boyer) and her husband Andrew Boyer of Longmeadow, Mass., as well as his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and surviving sibling Thomas C. Sullivan. He was predeceased by his wife Carol, his daughter Carol Anne (“Sullivan”) Spafford of West Springfield, Mass., son-in-law Bruce Gardner of New Hampshire, and his brothers Terrance Sullivan, Robert Sullivan, David Sullivan, Roger Sullivan and his sisters Shirley Broen, Constance Cain, and Sylvia Thompson. In honor of Richard Sullivan, there will be A Liturgy of Christian Burial in St Thomas Church, 47 Pine St., W. Spfld., on TUES FEB 21, 2023 at 12:30 pm Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery.
