Robert James “Bob” Malvezzi passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at his West Springfield home on October 29, 2025. He was 92 years old. Born in Springfield, MA on March 22, 1933, he was one of three sons born to the late Louis and Vilga (Dionisi) Malvezzi. He was predeceased by his brother Salvatore Malvezzi.

Robert graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1951. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. After the Army, Robert continued his life of honorable service as a firefighter in Springfield for 34 years. He started at the Dwight Street Fire Station, then transferred to Massreco Street and finally to the Springfield Fire Department Station 5, in Indian Orchard, where he retired. Robert was a devout Catholic and dedicated family man. He was a gifted athlete, playing football in high school. He was an avid fan of the UCONN Women’s Basketball team and Coach Gino Auriemma. He loved the past teams of the New York Giants and New York Yankees. He played basketball and went to the gym daily and his enthusiasm for fitness lasted his entire life. He enjoyed listening to all of the great Italian tenors.

Robert will be missed by his devoted wife Judith (Della Mattera) Malvezzi of 53 years, his brother Louis Malvezzi and his wife Ann, his sisters-in-law Gert Malvezzi and Joan (Della Mattera) Higgins, brother-in-law Frank Della Mattera, his loving children Chris, Gary, Julie, Laurie, and Sandra and many nieces and nephews, grandchildren, Angela, Sheila, Alex, Todd, Bella, Grace, Joel, Luke, Mia and Dorothy and several great-grandchildren. He had a very special bond with his granddaughter Mia and his grandson and best buddy Luke. He also leaves behind his best friend of many years and former fellow Firefighter Richard Hanna.

There will be a memorial visitation from 4-6pm at Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 5, and Robert’s military funeral will be at 9am on Thursday at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
