Roger D. Stevens, 83, of West Springfield, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Born in Springfield on January 2, 1943, he was one of three children born to the late Stanley and Mary Stevens. He will be lovingly remembered by his cherished wife of 48 years, Mary Ellen (Champoux) Stevens. He was the devoted father of Matthew Stevens and his wife, Kara, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts; Sarah Sawyer and her husband, Jimmy, of Wilmington; and Kelli Stevens. He was the proud grandfather of Colin Sawyer and Mary-Katherine and Kiernan Stevens.
Roger is also survived by his brother, Mark Stevens, and his wife, Judy, of Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Carroll DeGeorge, and his daughter, Julie Stevens.
Roger graduated from West Springfield High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Fitchburg State University in 1966. He lived in West Springfield for nearly his entire life and was a dedicated and popular woodshop teacher for more than 20 years at West Springfield Junior High School. The woodworking projects his students constructed grace countless homes throughout the community, and the clocks, rocking horses, and furniture he crafted will remain treasured keepsakes for his family. Roger finished his teaching career at the West Springfield Middle School from 1998-2004, where he taught Technology Education students in grades 6-8.
An avid gardener and fisherman, Roger especially enjoyed spending time at his family's home on Otis Reservoir. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, where he taught CCD and served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector for many years. Friends and family will fondly remember his sense of humor, the nicknames he bestowed on those he loved, and his unique turns of phrase.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, followed by burial at St. Thomas Cemetery. All arrangements have been entrusted to Toomey-O'Brien Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Roger's name to the Alzheimer's Association .
